Rest In Peace, Poor Compy

After arguing with my husband for four months about whether or not my computer was dying, I finally win…..the hard way. Every so often, I would turn on the poor thing, and would get “The Blue Screen of Death”. Usually, either he or my son could figure out what was causing it, and could construct a workaround. A couple of times, the only thing we could do was peform a rollback. I also had at least one fan that was running loud upon startup. The computer did that a couple of weeks after I bought it, and Dell had to replace the CPU.

Two days ago, I got both, the BSoD and the Fan in overdrive. And, no, I did NOT overclock my computer, even though I am an MMORPG player. This time, nothing anyone could do would recover the system from either one.

So, even though the computer is only 3 years old, I am dumping it, rather than getting it repaired for what would be the third time in its history. Enough is enough. The XPS Gen 3, Dell’s first attempt at a gaming computer, was NOT a good model. I am not that much of a World of Warcraft player anymore anyway.

Maybe I will be able to upload photos to my blog, my Yahoo groups, etc with my new computer. They have been disappearing into the ether on Compy. (Calling it Compy is my nod to www.homestarrunner.com. Visit that site for a rediculous time.)

The Joy of Sox

What is it with all the rest of you knitters and socks? I never got it. I have knit two pairs of socks in my knitting career, but never felt the call before now.

Suddenly, I have joined the ranks. I have two pairs on the needles, thanks to KFYS and Project Spectrum (Gotta use up that blue sock yarn I bought in a weak moment 3 years ago), and I have to say, I am enjoying it! It probably is the Toe Up, Magic Needle method that has hooked me. It really helps to have a way to easily try on a sock to make sure it fits.  The yarns are very fine gauge Socka. I am knitting with size 1’s and getting 9 stitches to the inch.  One is self striping, the other is a “spotty” pattern.  Sorry, no pictures yet. I will make my latest excuse in my next post.  LOL  (Actually, sob…)

The DUMB think is, I am knitting with wool, and I cannot wear it next to my skin, so these two pair are total losers, unless I go to REI and buy sock liners. Either that, or I will find a friend who wants them. Never hard to do.

Off the wagon?

Oh, great, someone help me justify this. I just went to Web’s website to buy something for my SP friend, and some Cascade Fixation for my dd so she could knit some easier to knit socks than the ones she is attempting, and I fell off the Knit From Your Stash wagon. I bought yarn for myself. I didn’t mean to. It just happened. I liked the colorway of Fixation she picked, so I got a couple of balls for myself so we could have matching sox. Remember, I am not going by the “sock yarn doesn’t count” exemption. I have my own loophole. “Joslyn’s Fiber Farm Scarf Club yarn doesn’t count”.

Then I looked at the weaving yarn to see if they had anything I could use for a shawl I have been dying to make from “Victorian Lace Today”, and they did!

Now, I won’t be able to buy anything on vacation, because the rule is you can fall off the wagon once!

But, wait. I did order some shawl yarn from them in December that ended up being unavailable……so…….this was a replacement…..? And, the sock yarn? Ummmmm. A gift. For my dd…….so, I can make her some socks for me to wear when she wears the ones she is making…..?

 Yeah, that’s it.

SP10 is Off and Running

By now all of us in SP10 should have our Secret Pals, and should have pretty good ideas how to start spoiling them. I know I do. In some ways, mine is so similar to me I can’t believe it. In other ways, she is very different. I think this is going to be great fun. I wish I could say what I am going to do for her. It is not all knitting related. I got at least one funny idea from reading her blog today.

I am actually looking forward more to the spoiling than to being spoiled myself. I think that comes from being the oldest of six, though. From an early age, I got to help Mom and Dad with Christmas presents and Easter baskets. Some mean big kids told me the horrible truth about Santa when I was just 4, so Mom turned it into a good thing, by helping me learn to BE Santa.  That is not to say I don’t love getting presents and surprises myself! Coming from a large family, you learn to appreciate the whole idea of being singled out for anything special. So, go ahead, whoever has MY name. Spoil away!

Button, button, who’s got the…aww, forget it.

I have been trying all day to figure out how to get buttons to post in my sidebars. No luck. I give up. I am wasting valuable knitting time.

So, dear Secret Pal, I hope I figure out how to get my Amazon list up before you need it, if you do.

And, other friends, I do hope I can get pictures to post soon.
