Am I Still Me?

You may have noticed, I didn’t get moved over to Blogger, like I said I was going to.

I have been dealing with a teeny identity theft problem. Someone hacked into my ebay and Paypal accounts, and tried to buy several thousand dollars worth of stuff. Fortunately, an alert seller cross-checks names and addresses, and noticed neither the names nor the addresses matched each other, notified both ebay and Paypal, and called me!

I have been busy changing passwords on everything I can think of, checking everywhere I do online business to make sure nothing else has been hacked into, and running three different programs to see if something has been downloaded onto my computer to give someone access to my passwords. Neither Adaware, Spybot nor MacAffee can detect anything other than 7 plain old cookies that have shown up since my last scan, which ran automatically last week.

Looks like I am safe, this time, again!

The last time this happened, someone at at doctor’s office stole my debit card number and tried to charge some stuff. Fortunately, that didn’t work either. First thing she tried was to start a membership with Columbia House Dvd’s. They sent the Dvds to MY house, not hers, because their system went with the address that was on file with the bank! That alerted me.

I called my bank. The only other thing she had charged was some weight loss program, which hadn’t gone through yet, and the bank stopped it.

The doctor’s office figured out who it was, and fired her.

I have been very lucky so far that the only people who have tried this with me have been idiots.

Virtual Vacation Questionnaire

1. If you could visit any state in the US, which would it be and why?
Either Alaska, Hawaii, Delaware or New Jersey, because those are the only states I have to go until I have visited all 50 states!
2. If you could visit any country in the world, other than your own, which would it be and why?
Ireland, because I am Irish American, among other things. My sister and my parents have been there several times, and they have brought home such wonderful stories of how well they were treated, and how much they felt at home. The photos they took make me long to see this beautiful country and experience it myself.

3. Have you ever driven across several
states/providence/countries?
Many times, starting when I was a young teenager. My parents bought a used motorhome, and began taking extended vacations with all six of us kids. They couldn’t afford to take us on plane trips, but we learned early on the truth of the old saying, “getting there is half the fun.”

4. Have you ever visited someplace you consider exotic? Where was it?
When our kids were younger, my husband and I took them to Jamaica. We have also been to several other islands in the Caribbean on cruise trips. Puerto Rico was our favorite.

5. What was your favorite “travel” vacation? Why?
The time my dad had 9 weeks of vacation saved up, and we piled into the “Winnie”, and set out west. We went all through all the states west of the Mississippi, and saw everything we could think of. I loved it because it was like living “God Bless America”; “from the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam.”

6. Have you ever played tourist in your own home city/state (if international, country)? Explain.
My daughter and I take any chance we can get to take little “girl trips”. We will visit any city near us we can get a chance to, including once or twice checking into a hotel in our own city and visiting the sites.

7. Are you a museum visitor, beach comer or an amusement seeker?
A museum visitor, although what I really love are factory tours. I love seeing how things are made, anything at all, large machinery to food items. However, I never pass up a good beachcombing chance, and love the ocean.

8. What’s your favorite type of yarn?
Right now, it is either alpaca or a good merino.

9. What’s your least favorite type of yarn?
Cheap acrylic that “squeaks” when you knit it.

10. What items do you like to knit/crochet?
Shawls, anything lace. I am learning to appreciate socks.

11. What do you pack, knit/crochet wise when you go on vacation?
Not much. One small emergency project, a scarf maybe. I live in hopes of finding a great yarn shop where ever I go!

12. What other crafts do you do/would like to do other than Knit/Crochet?
   Cross-stitch, some spinning, beadweaving.

13. Are you allergic to anything? (Yarn wise or treat wise)
I get migraines, so I can’t eat nuts and bananas. I am allergic to strawberries. Yarns, I get itchy from rough wools, which is why I like merino. Mohair is itchy, too, but I wear it over something.

14. What is your favorite color? Least Favorite?
I love all bright colors, I am a redhead, so I also like knitting with good redhead colors. I don’t like gray, and black.

15. Sweet or Savory (Treat not personality)?
      Sweet!

16. Anything else we are forgetting to ask that you think your partner desperately needs to know?
I have a really wild sense of the absurd, very willing to try silly things. Life is kind of rough right now, so I look for fun where I can get it, like Virtual Vacation!

Finland, Finland Finland

Jaana, our Finnish Virtual Vacationer noticed a comment I made about Stora Enso, a Finnish Paper company, on the Virtual Vacation Blogsite, and was kind enough to return a comment to me. I thought I would share it with the rest of the KVVS’ers.

“So Cookie, it’s not Nokia Finland is famous about. Have you ever heared
Finlandia vodka??  They have summer promotion in our community.. :)
BTW my cousin has been in Texas, working for Nokia , a year. Now my
brother is staying in Detroit for a 2 years, maybe I’ll visit states one day.”

I emailed her back, and told her that around here, most people would probably just think Nokia was Texan, because their regional headquarters is in Irving. I also said, I hadn’t heard of Finlandia Vodka, but I had heard of the musical piece by that name by Jean Sibelius. And, I hoped she did get a chance to visit the States someday, and get to meet some of her knitting friends.

By the way,  although I have never been to Finland, my parents have, about 7 years ago. My father still raves about it. They travel a lot, and if he recommends a place, it is worth it. On that basis, if any of you get a chance to visit Finland, take it.

There’s a Hole In the Nest, and Baby Bird is About to Fly!

Cookie Jr. graduated from high school a year ago, but let her take a year off before college to work, and collect herself, so to speak. She had a really hard time in school, being a very bright artistically gifted, but learning disabled and slightly ADD kid. She actually said she didn’t want to go to college. A year working in a supermarket deli fixed that!

She filled out an application to a nearby school this spring, but the envelope sat on the hall table for a week, while Philip was in the hospital. I finally said to her, “You are not going to be one of those young people who gives up going to college because one of their parents has cancer. It will ruin your life. No matter what happens to your dad, you are going.” So we mailed the application off.

And heard nothing………(hum the “Jeopardy” theme among yourselves.)

Today, she got a little post card, reminding her that her orientation is coming up at the end of the month. Wha???? No acceptance letter?

Ok. But, there is still the problem of housing. This is a small school. They only have two dorms. And if Cookie Jr. doesn’t get into a dorm, she can’t go, because the school is 50 miles away, and she doesn’t drive. The apartment situation in the school’s town is dismal. Plus, Cookie Jr, really doesn’t have the skills needed to live entirely on her own yet.

So, Philip goes online to our bank account to see if the school cashed the check for the deposit to the housing department. Yep. Meanwhile, I check the school’s website. They still have a couple of openings left for the dorm she wanted. That means, she got in.

This school is in one of the Texas cities that has had major flooding, so who knows what has happened to the paperwork?

Then it hits me. Oh…..my………GOD!!!!!!!!!!! My BABY is leaving HOME in……..the website says students are to report to campus on August 20th…….AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH.

I thought I was cool with this. I thought I was ready. Holy cow!

Cookie Jr, of course, isn’t helping things. “We have to go shopping. I know exactly what I want. I wonder what my roommate will be like. I wonder how hard it will be to freak her out. Do you think it would be better to put goldfish in the bathtub or jello?  I wanna go to the hippie store. Can I get one of those Indian tapestry things for my bed?”

“Shut up, Cookie Jr. Mommy is having a crisis, here.”

What happened to my chubby cheeked toddler with the curly blonde hair?

I gotta go knit something. Something sad and black.

Another SP10 Package

Actually, it arrived a couple of weeks ago, but true to form, I forgot everything I knew about getting pictures from the camera to the blog. I finally gave up again, and posted the pics to Flickr, again. Sorry, Lefty Gal.  She sent me some really cool, color coordinated swag. I think I like this woman! Click on the Flickr pic for the descriptions, and don’t miss the little corgi stitch markers. They are adorable.
